A Rare Flying Safari to see the Namaqualand Flowers in Spring Bloom in 2026

For a few short weeks each year, Namaqualand does something extraordinary. This vast, often quiet stretch of South Africa’s West Coast shifts almost overnight, as wildflowers spread across the plains in carpets of orange, yellow, white and purple. Our overnight Flying Flower Safari by Africa Sky Runners is built around that brief seasonal moment - the spring bloom of the Namaqualand flowers — and the journey to reach it is part of the experience.

A Spectacular Seasonal Transformation of the Namaqualand Flowers

Namaqualand’s flower season is special because it turns a dry, semi-desert landscape into one of the world’s great natural flower displays — but only for a short time. The region forms part of the Succulent Karoo biome, and SANParks notes that Namaqualand has the richest bulb flora of any arid region on Earth, with around 3,500 plant species and more than 1,000 found nowhere else. The bloom usually happens in August and September, when winter rains and spring sunshine trigger millions of dormant seeds and bulbs to flower almost at once. What makes it feel so remarkable is the contrast: for much of the year the land is harsh, dry and muted; then suddenly the plains, valleys and hillsides are covered in orange, yellow, white, pink and purple flowers.

It is also unpredictable, which is part of its magic. The quality, timing and location of the flowers depend on rainfall, temperature, sunlight and wind, so no two seasons are exactly the same. On sunny days, many of the flowers open fully and turn towards the sun, while on cold or overcast days they may stay closed. Visitors often see Namaqualand daisies, gazanias, vygies, lilies, flowering succulents and other hardy species that have adapted to survive long dry periods before blooming quickly when conditions are right. The result is a wild, living event.

Embark on a Scenic Journey with our Flying Flower Safari Adventure

Our Flying Flower Safari adventure begins at Stellenbosch Airfield, where guests board our private Cessna aircraft for the flight north. Within minutes, the Cape Winelands give way to Table Bay, the Swartland, Langebaan Lagoon, coastal dunes, fishing villages and the wide, open landscapes of Namaqualand. From the air, the scale of the West Coast feels wilder, quieter, and expansive.

After landing near Koingnaas, the pace slows. A guided flower safari takes guests into the heart of the Succulent Karoo, one of the world’s most remarkable arid ecosystems. Local guide Dudley Wessels brings the landscape to life with stories of the plants, geology, history and people of the region. Depending on rainfall and timing, the route may reveal Namaqualand daisies, gazanias, vygies, Cape marigolds and flowering succulents found nowhere else. There is time to stop, walk, photograph, and enjoy a picnic among the flowers.

Experience Coastal Serenity at Namaqua Flower Beach Camp

The overnight stay is at Namaqua Flower Beach Camp, a seasonal tented camp by Chiefs Tented Camps, set close to the Atlantic coastline. Sundowners unfold with the sea on the horizon and wildflowers at your feet, followed by a relaxed three-course authentic local dinner under clear West Coast skies.

The next morning begins gently, with coffee (and good old South African favourite – the rusk!), breakfast and one last guided drive through the bloom before lunch in Hondeklipbaai, a small fishing village known for its coastal character and seafood. The return flight to Stellenbosch follows the coastline south, closing the loop with another unforgettable view from above.

It is an amazing overnight flying experience, a rare chance to see Namaqualand in flower, from the ground and the sky.
