Chasing Stars in the Tankwa
Sometimes the best experiences begin with a simple idea, like taking a group of passionate photographers, add one of South Africa’s wildest landscapes, a small aircraft and some of the darkest skies around — and see what happens.
Last month we joined forces with @lifeofmikeza and @sonyalphasa to host a special astrophotography experience in the Tankwa, combining a hands-on photography course with our Desert Space & Stars flying experience.
Embarking on a Photographic Journey Across the Tankwa Desert
The adventure began with the flight itself, leaving the familiar landscapes of the Cape behind and watching the vast, rugged Tankwa unfold beneath the aircraft. Once on the ground, cameras were rarely far away. The afternoon was spent exploring and photographing the extraordinary desert landscape, and the eclectic Onverklaarbar at the Tankwa Tented Camp before heading onto the hills for sunset and the special sunset and sundowner ceremony where we get to Karoo.
And then came the reason we had travelled somewhere this remote. Away from city lights, the Tankwa night sky becomes part of the landscape. Tripods came out, cameras were set up and the group settled in for an evening of learning, experimenting and capturing the stars under the guidance of Mike Eloff and with the amazing Sony Alpha equipment.
The Transformative Journey of a Flying Safari
After a night beneath those enormous skies, breakfast in the desert and a scenic flight home completed the experience.
For us, it was another wonderful example of what a flying safari can become: not simply a way of getting somewhere, but a way of bringing together remarkable places, passionate people and experiences built around what our guests love to do.
