Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique: a Africa safari destination with a unique story

Gorongosa National Park is compelling because it has endured, recovered, and kept rebuilding. And the appeal is that its not a generic safari stop, but a park with an amazing conservation story behind it as well as incredible scenery and pristine beauty.

With Africa Sky Runners, reaching this remote, rich, wild, and exciting destination becomes painless.  Gorongosa is a key feature of our Bush, Beach & Wildlife flying safari.

A park rebuilt through resilience and restoration

Gorongosa is widely recognised as one of Africa’s great wildlife restoration stories. The park’s recovery followed severe wartime losses, with official Gorongosa material noting that more than 95% of its large mammal population was wiped out during years of civil conflict and instability in Mozambique. In 2008, the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation formed the Gorongosa Project as a public-private partnership to jointly manage and restore the park, and in 2018 that agreement was extended for another 25 years. What makes the restoration credible is that it has not focused only on animals; it has paired ecological recovery with community development, science, and long-term landscape stewardship.

Wildlife and flora give the park its real character

Now - Gorongosa’s draw is the breadth of its biodiversity.  From our own experience we can testify to floodplains crowded with waterbuck, lions moving through savannah and woodland, elephants around waterholes, and strong birdlife across the system. The park is also known for large antelope populations around Lake Urema, while its bird diversity is exceptional, with hundreds of species recorded in the park alone.

The flora and habitats are just as important as the wildlife. Gorongosa is not a single landscape. It spans floodplain, riverine forest, woodland, savannah, and the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. The mountain itself holds one of only two true rainforests in central Mozambique and supports endemic and near-endemic species, which gives the park unusual botanical and ecological range for one destination. That variety is a large part of why Gorongosa feels so alive in the field.

What activities travellers can do in Gorongosa

Gorongosa offers more than game drives.

Activities in Gorongosa National Park:

  • Guided safari drives through floodplains, fever tree and palm forests, with chances to see lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, antelope, primates, and birdlife.

  • Walking safaris focused on botanical detail, animal signs, tracks, and the smaller workings of the bush.

  • Boat safaris on Lake Urema to explore hippos, crocodiles, and aquatic birdlife.

  • Canoe safaris on the Pungué River through reed beds, sandy banks, and riverside forest.

  • Community cycling visits that connect guests with local culture and conservation-linked livelihoods.

  • Mount Gorongosa excursions to rainforest, waterfalls, and the coffee project supporting forest restoration.

  • Specialist birding in one of the park’s most ecologically varied landscapes.

Why Gorongosa is such an intriguing place to visit

What makes Gorongosa intriguing is that you are not only looking at wildlife. You are seeing a functioning restoration landscape where ecology, science, tourism, and local livelihoods are tied together. For travellers, that changes the texture of the experience. The sightings are there, the scenery is there, and the habitats are remarkably rich, but there is also a deeper sense that this is a park still writing its next chapter. That gives Gorongosa more weight than a destination built only around spectacle. It is a place to visit for the wildlife, certainly, but also for the rare privilege of seeing resilience made visible on the ground.

With Africa Sky Runners, reaching Gorongosa is painless.  A bush airstrip located at the entrance to the park at Chitengo allows easy access for our Cessna aircraft : a short 90 minute flight from Vilancoulos  saves hours and hours of drive on rough rural roads.
