Fly to the Flowers – Our Inaugural Namaqualand Flying Safari

In August we finally put our Fly to the Flowers itinerary to the test, hosting travel writers, together with a small group of guests, on our inaugural Namaqualand flower flying safari.

And it worked just as we had imagined.

Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Namaqua National Park

Flying from Stellenbosch, the journey north was already part of the adventure — crossing the Cape mountains before following the increasingly wild West Coast towards the remote village and airstrip at Koingnaas. From the air, long empty beaches, dunes and rocky coastline created a wonderful sense of leaving the familiar behind before we touched down at the tiny airfield.

From there we explored the flowers, landscapes and coastline of Namaqua National Park with our local guide Dudley Wessels. The flowers may not have been at their spectacular best this season, but there was still plenty of colour and beauty and the experience reinforced something important: Namaqualand offers far more than just fields of daisies. Rugged coastline, extraordinary plant life, immense open spaces and the feeling of being in wild places are all part of its appeal.

Immersive Experience at Namaqua Beach Flower Camp

A real highlight was our stay at the Namaqua Beach Flower Camp, a seasonal tented camp tucked away on this wonderfully remote stretch of coastline. Staying right amongst the landscape changes the experience completely. With the Atlantic nearby, flowers scattered through the surrounding veld and almost no sign of the outside world, the camp gave us time to slow down and properly enjoy where we were. Sundowners, dinner at camp and waking up in this wild corner of Namaqualand became as memorable as the flowers themselves.

There were other wonderfully simple moments too — including a leisurely picnic beside the Atlantic with a glass of bubbly, surrounded by the rocky coastline and seemingly endless space.

For us, the trip proved the concept beautifully. Our Flying Flower Safari is not simply a quicker way to visit Namaqualand in flower season. It is a complete little adventure — combining spectacular flying, a remote coastal camp, local knowledge, nature, food and places that are difficult to reach on a conventional itinerary.

And when the flowers do decide to put on their biggest show, that will simply make an already memorable journey even better.
